On the Carpet:

INTRO/CONTACT

I’m an experienced Psychiatric Nurse. I’ve taught nurses in many capacities and I teach nursing for various colleges. I came to nursing by an unusual path. Unique, to my knowledge. How many nurses have been patients many times over where they work? How many attended Harvard Medical School prior to nursing?  Unique.

This project of mine focuses on mental health from three main perspectives:

1) Psychiatric nursing: tips, education, and training. The material I offer is deeply evidence-based and often available nowhere else within health care education: nursing and otherwise.

2) Mental health as experienced by those with mental illnesses, and

3) The interface between the prior two groups. We would all do well, far better than we ever have done to date, to get along far better than we have. We act far too often as adversaries; in fact, we are natural allies with much to offer each other. Both nurses and patients who fail to see these truths suffer badly as a result.

As a longstanding, experienced, insightful, and talented member of both groups placed across an unfortunate and completely useless divide – nurses and patients – I offer myself as an informal ambassador, coach, and teacher:

I experience depression sometimes. It deeply informs my practice and teaching. Experience is the best teacher of all, don’t you think?

I developed, tested, refined and teach Golden Rule Care, a training program I’m building so nurses can get more done and have more fun at work by interacting more effectively with their patients. I’m working on a book about it; in the meantime, I offer tips.

Everything I offer here is based on these values and goals. I serve humanity and build a lasting legacy. Along the way, alas, I must earn a living and fund my efforts. Such is life. yes? It’s not my goal but it’s a requirement along the way. A man and his family must eat…

Given such realities, and in light of the promise this work has shown after  decades of work without income, I have begun to build my transition. In time I will make this effort my career, not just a hobby.

As part of this transition, I have become a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking products discussed on this blog with amazon.com. Although I plan to focus on books, we shall see where this path leads. As always, I welcome your feedback. You teach me as I teach you: that’s how it works!

  1. Hi Greg! Very intriguing and thought out blog. I am a veeeerry slow learner in the blog department. You are very creative and give positive and open comments that i believe help. As a therapist and pastoral counselor at a psyche hospital… humor goes a long way. Best of blessings, hope and joyful laughter.

  8. Greg, As a former teacher of mental health nursing, I love what you are doing on your blog. As a longtime retiree, it thrills me to see the younger generation(s) carrying on what is so dear to my heart–writing about things like education and advocacy and reducing stigma. Thanks for the like on my blog! Lois

  9. I like everything you do and post. Your ideas and drive to bring nursing information forward is unique. You followed up to a FB about an Assist AD in Az. not too long ago. I do appreciate that and will tell you that is a plant to which the only connection with the AG office of Az is not as it seems. It is just another ave to shed the light about governmental corruption. Later

    • I must say, I highly approve and applaud your taste in bloggers! I have assumed all along that I encounter false information; I try to build patterns, and try to keep in mind the uncertainty built into my data. I;m interested in your interesting information, thanks – Greg

  12. Thank you very much for being there when I needed to read something like this. It was the perfect timing, If my illness lets me go one or two more weeks I will know that someone was kind enough to give me the right time of day when no one else has. To everyone I know I’m just a small death waiting to happen and i would say even if I just waited to let nature take it’s course that the max would be two weeks to a month or my life being prolonged. So why wait. I need to speak to someone who will not have me Baker Acted because of the terminal illness that would only be a hinder not a help. I have to dot my i’s and cross my T’s and get ready for the afterlife but I’m all alone and I need someone to make my future plans after I am gone for example I have a condo fully paid for, no mortgage and have no one to leave it to. My illness and situation has been such a burden on my family that they have disowned me. I want to leave my worldly possessions to some one who needs them. The thoughts of suicide are going through my head constantly but I have work to do before I go.
