On the Carpet:

Nurse Wisdom in Two Words. Two!

“Shit Happens.”

If you think these words are just metaphorical…

You’re not a nurse!

About Big Red Carpet Nurse (1750 Articles)
Along with other stuff I enjoy that pays the bills (a plus!), I'm a budding nurse comic. I plan, like fake Opthomologist Rand Paul, to create my own professional organization solely so it will grant me a Doctorate. In my case, the org will be something like the AANC (American Association of Nurse Comics), and it will (trust me on this point) agree to make me the first ever DNC: Doctor of Nurse Comedy. I'll keep you posted!

  1. Ugh, that was my story several days last week. Too many of my patient ‘s were constipated and the doctor’s ordered the usual protocol. It was a busy day for myself and the aides!

    • I’ve counseled countless patients over the years away from aggressive laxative use. Patience is much kinder and healthy in the end for most people, and easier on staff as well. Iatrogenic diarrhea and/or incontinence shows poor prescribing judgement in my opinion, unnecessary and counterproductive impatience unless there is evidence of a pressing need. Even if it causes no immediate harm, laxative overuse offers various risks over time. I hold ordered laxatives rather often, and always ask patients if they feel a need for any given dose, reviewing education as needed. It saves them much suffering!

      • Too many folks think only benefits of treatment. We need to balance such considerations with costs, or what business have we offering people advice? If the calculus says treat, then move forward of course. Thanks, Carol.
