On the Carpet:

Liebster Award – Nice!

I’m pleased and flattered to report that Life of Mon has been so kind as to nominate Big Red Carpet Nursing for the Liebster Award. I don’t qualify for it – far too many followers – but if Life of Mon can break rules and be so nice about it, I can too. Doesn’t the Liebster have a cool sticker? Thanks, Mon! (Just typing that phrase was the most fun I’ve had so far today)

On we go the inevitable ‘worky’ part of it. Here goes!

Liebster Award rules:
Once you are nominated, make a post thanking and linking the person who nominated you.
– Include the Liebster Award sticker in the post too.
– Nominate 10 other bloggers who you feel are worthy of this award. Let them know they have been nominated by commenting on one of their posts.
– Ensure all of these bloggers have less than 200 followers [I like that part. Recognition makes much more of an impact when you’re new].
– Answer the ten questions asked to you by the person who nominated you, and make ten questions of your own for your nominees.
– Lastly, COPY these rules in the post [Done!].

Note there is no rule about the order in which you proceed. I’m always alert to such opportunities to do things my way…

On we go to the questions – another nice feature of the Liebster. Other awards have required me to make them AND answer them:

1. What are your biggest dreams/goals? My goal is to find a way to make a living offering my own nursing curriculum. It could be my own school, or better – I’m no fan of administration stuff – a post within a nursing school that grants me enough discretion to do my thing my way. I could be the professor of kind/savvy goofball nursing, or some such.

2. What is one tiny step you can take now to get close to one of your dreams? I can post about it, which I certainly need to do more often. I’m easily distracted, as I have broad interests. Perhaps my tiny step should be to focus a little more: reasonable enough! I’m also need somehow to set time aside more regularly for writing my book: optimally the posts and the book work could be the same material. Efficient!

3. What are 7 things you are grateful for this week? Sunlight, sharp cheddar cheese, Jen, Lily, Sugar, family not otherwise listed, friends, getting paid to be a psych nurse, bouncy balls, the freedom to exceed 7 things…

4. What is your best blogging advice? Do it and keep doing it – forget about perfection, it won’t happen and that’s just fine. Mistakes fade into the distant past quicker than most people think. Ask lots of questions, try new things often, and make it fun: don’t flame out getting all serious about it. Fun and success go together, hand in hand. Stressing yourself out is a great alternative, but ONLY if you want to suffer and fail. Remember, always, it’s YOUR blog and you get to set the rules. You also get to change them. Manage your expectations: there are a billion (give or take a few) bloggers out there, and most of us get far less attention than we’d like for quite a while. Be good to yourself: strive to be your kindest critic. Laugh at yourself, at the world, at the bad stuff, at everything. Did I mention having fun?

5. What is one personal wound of yours that you can turn into wisdom? (This is your choice, if you don’t want to, you don’t have to answer it) Dropping out of medical school. To get into Harvard Medical School and come away not a doctor… big blow to the ego and pocketbook. It’s better now – it’s been 20 years – but still a sore spot. I learned a lot of useful things about depression that way, and about life. What seems, IS the end of your life, what IS your shameful doom: give it time. You’re likely mistaken. People get over things, and life goes on somehow. Unless you kill yourself…

6. What is one thing you can do to let your joy scream across the pain in everyone? 😉 Find a reason to laugh, smile, or smirk at the absurdity with which modern life is supersaturated. It helps when you can enjoy it.

7. What is your favorite song? Mack the Knife. I love hearing it in my imagination, what neurologists call an ear worm, and humming along. It’s also a reliable warning that I’m getting angry or frustrated: I spontaneously start humming it to myself. For a logical type guy so easily blind-sided by feelings, a warning signal is a very useful thing indeed.

8. What is your favorite novel? Ugh. I’m not big on favorites. Variety and novelty are both far more interesting. What’s the one thing I’d take to a deserted island, if I had to pick just one thing? Easy – a cruise ship. Why accept limits?

9. What is your favorite quote? The one I just read fo the first time and appreciated. The novelty is such a large part of the appeal of such a thing. If I had to pick, I’d say “So it goes.” – Vonnegut

10. What does love mean to you? A mystery. You feel it like you feel the pull of a magnet. It’s real, clearly, but quite mysterious, invisible, magical. Like magnetism, it may fade in time. Unlike magnetism, you can’t find or create it in any reliable way. We’d be better off not so dependent on such a messy thing, much less vulnerable, far more stable. We’d be better off, except of course that it’s just not true. When you say such a thing, you lie to someone, maybe yourself. Ignoring love is like ignoring gravity. You can’t help falling, right?

Finally, the nominations. I don’t like picking them, because it involves NOT picking so many others.

This award, at least, gives me a free pass to exclude most blogs: all those with 200 or more followers. It’s required (usually), even. Phew!

I’ve learned not to think too much on it, as it only gets me frustrated and I don’t have the time or energy to do it right. All these nominations are well-deserved, but the others… Here we go, folks!

2. The Little Austrian

About Big Red Carpet Nurse (1750 Articles)
Along with other stuff I enjoy that pays the bills (a plus!), I'm a budding nurse comic. I plan, like fake Opthomologist Rand Paul, to create my own professional organization solely so it will grant me a Doctorate. In my case, the org will be something like the AANC (American Association of Nurse Comics), and it will (trust me on this point) agree to make me the first ever DNC: Doctor of Nurse Comedy. I'll keep you posted!

    • You’re so kind! I’m glad you enjoy it, I had fun writing it. I’d of run out of steam long ago if I didn’t keep it fun at least some of the time. My first outing with this blog was all serious, and I quickly burnt out and set it aside fo ra year before coming back just over a year ago.
      Again, thanks Mon! 🙂
