Obama Proposes That Medicare Be Given the Right to Negotiate the Cost of Drugs – NYTimes.com

US law, for example, bans Medicare from negotiating drug prices. They’re required to pay pharmaceutical firms whatever they demand, costing Americans many $billions extra every year.

President Obama has proposed to end this hugely wasteful policy.

Let’s see if GOP leadership is really about efficient government and cutting costs, or if it’s actually about nothing more than providing lavish giveaways to rich donors:

About Big Red Carpet Nurse (1750 Articles)
Along with other stuff I enjoy that pays the bills (a plus!), I'm a budding nurse comic. I plan, like fake Opthomologist Rand Paul, to create my own professional organization solely so it will grant me a Doctorate. In my case, the org will be something like the AANC (American Association of Nurse Comics), and it will (trust me on this point) agree to make me the first ever DNC: Doctor of Nurse Comedy. I'll keep you posted!

  1. I hope something can be done. This conservative-led Congress gives me little hope.

    • History, people assume, moves in one direction. If you read a little, it becomes clear how false that idea is. Conservatives today are sowing the seeds for their demise. Trends comes, peak, die. Later, people will have trouble imagining how powerful they once were. Hope and effort and persistence will help make it so, sooner than most imagine.

    • History, people assume, moves in one direction. If you read a little history, it becomes clear how false thst idea realy is. Conservatives today are becoming increasingly extreme, trying to outdo each other, and they are sowing the seeds of their own demise politically. Trends come, peak, go too far in their pride, and die. Over and over and over. Later, people will have trouble understaniding how today’s conservative could have been so stupic and self-destructive. Hope, persistance, and effort help bring this future sooner. We can have it, I think, far sooner than most people imagine. The powerful forever become yesterday’s news in a heartbeat, historically.

  2. What would be better is if the government put permanent restrictions on Pharma’s inflated US pricing and gouging scumbag operations. If medicines and drugs were actually affordable in the US, we wouldn’t need to haggle to begin with. The poor, disabled, and the elderly could get the medication they need without being humiliated and bullied into leaping through flaming hoops first.
What would be great is if Obama lead the charge to take Pharma to court on monopoly and racketeering charges. Treat the cause, not the symptoms.

    • I agree. ANY step would be far better than none; If Medicare begins negotiating prices down, it may set a precident for other insurers, as Medicare decisions often do. It would help potentially lots of people, far from all, but still a step forward.
